Best high-protein shakes and drinks per calorie
Which bottled shakes give you the most protein for the fewest calories, and how coffee-shop protein drinks compare.
Ready-to-drink shakes are where protein per calorie gets really competitive. Most of them are built to do one job: deliver a lot of protein in a bottle without much else. That makes them a good category to rank by grams of protein per 100 calories, the same number our leaderboard uses.
We track 29 shakes and drinkable yogurts from 7 brands, plus a handful of Starbucks protein drinks for comparison. Every number is from the brand's own published nutrition info. Flavors with identical numbers are grouped into one row.

What stands out
The top is tightly packed. 20 of the 29 shakes we track score 18 g or more of protein per 100 calories. The leader, David Protein Milkshake – Vanilla, has 30 g for 140 calories (21.4). Pure Protein Complete Protein Shake – Galactic Brownie Batter matches it at 30 g and 140 calories, and we've now confirmed that against the full nutrition panel for the 11 fl oz / 325 mL bottle.
Flavor can move the number. David's Vanilla and Chocolate milkshakes both list 30 g of protein, but Chocolate is 150 calories to Vanilla's 140. That's enough to drop it from 21.4 to 20.0.
Big bottles don't win on this metric, but they're close. The Quest 45g Protein Milkshake (every flavor we track) has the most protein of anything here, 45 g, for 230 calories (19.6). fairlife Core Power 42g is similar: 42 g for 230 calories (18.3). If you want one large serving after training, those are hard to beat on total protein, even if they're a step behind the top on per-calorie.
Same brand, very different bottle. Core Power comes in two strengths. The 42g version scores 18.3, the 26g version 15.3 (26 g for 170 calories). If you're buying Core Power for protein, the bigger bottle is the more efficient one.
Small can still be efficient. Oikos Pro Shots are tiny, 10 g for 60 calories, but that's still 16.7 per 100 calories. Oikos Pro Drinks, at 23 g for 120 calories, score 19.2. The lowest shake on our list is fairlife Core Power – Strawberry Banana 26g at 15.3, which would still beat every bar we track except David Gold.
What about coffee-shop protein drinks?
Starbucks now sells several drinks built around added protein. They're a different thing from a bottled shake (made to order, with milk and syrup), and the numbers show it:
| # | Item | Protein | Calories | Protein / 100 cal | Leaderboard rank | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Starbucks Iced Sugar-Free Vanilla Protein Latte (Grande) Grande (16 fl oz) | 29 g | 200 | 14.5 | #55 | label |
| 2 | Starbucks Iced Protein Matcha (Grande) Grande (16 fl oz) | 31 g | 260 | 11.9 | #73 | label |
| 3 | Starbucks Iced Vanilla Protein Latte (Grande) Grande (16 fl oz) | 29 g | 270 | 10.7 | #90 | label |
| 4 | Starbucks Protein Matcha (Grande, hot) Grande (16 fl oz) | 28 g | 300 | 9.3 | #108 | label |
| 5 | Starbucks Vanilla Protein Cream Cold Brew (Grande) Grande (16 fl oz) | 17 g | 300 | 5.7 | #136 | label |
The best of them, the Starbucks Iced Sugar-Free Vanilla Protein Latte (Grande), is 29 g for 200 calories, or 14.5. That's respectable, but it's 6.9 g per 100 calories behind the top bottled shake, and below every bottled shake we track. The full Starbucks breakdown is in our Starbucks ranking.
How to use this list
- If calories are your budget, pick from the top rows. The difference between 21.4 and 15.3 adds up if you drink one every day.
- If you want one big hit of protein, sort by the Protein column on the leaderboard instead.
- Taste and texture vary a lot in this category. Shared 👍/👎 taste votes sit next to each product on the leaderboard. They never change the rank, but they're a useful tiebreaker.
Caveats
These are label numbers, not lab tests, and recipes change. A few specific notes:
- We re-checked the Pure Protein Complete Protein Shake – Galactic Brownie Batter and both fairlife Nutrition Plan flavors against full nutrition panels on 2026-10-29: 1 bottle (11 fl oz / 325 mL) for Pure Protein and 1 bottle (11.5 fl oz / 340 mL) for fairlife. The brand site listed the Pure Protein flavor as "back in stock soon" when we checked.
- Starbucks drinks are made by hand and change with milk choice, size and customization. We list the Grande as published.
- Oikos Pro Drinks and Pro Shots are drinkable yogurts. We group them with shakes because that's how people use them.
